5e works by using an advantage/disadvantage procedure, exactly where as opposed to lots of modifiers, a DM can opt to simply enable a participant to roll 2d20 and get the higher or decreased number relying on whether or not they’re at an advantage or disadvantage in the problem.  A modifier is any
